Who is Sleep in Heavenly Peace?

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a non-profit organization with over 300 chapters in 46 U.S. states, plus additional chapters in Canada, Bahamas and Bermuda. SHP believes that a bed is essential for promoting proper physical health, mental well-being, and a higher quality of life by ensuring restorative and restful sleep. It is estimated that 3% of the population between the ages of 3 and 17 do not sleep in a proper bed they can call their own. SHP and all its volunteers have taken the initiative to end child “bedlessness”.

SHP Chapters raise funds and then hold volunteer “Build Days” to cut, sand, stain and build all the bed components. Once built, chapters receive requests from families in their specific community and deliver and assemble the bed(s) in the home and outfit them with the proper bedding, mattresses, and pillows for a good night’s sleep.

Supporting the goal and mission to end child “bedlessness,” volunteers roll up their sleeves and do something that directly impacts the kids in their community. That is where Litmos comes in.

Learning Before Litmos

Before Litmos, SHP felt their training was stale and lacked the quality that was engaging for their learners. Because of this, most of their chapters stopped using their LMS. According to Brian Scheibach, Chapter Growth Manager, “our previous LMS had no good way to assess what was learned at the end of the course. New chapter presidents are required to attend a 2 day in person training, but we knew they needed to go back home and take courses (we call it SHP University) on their schedule and at their pace for better knowledge retention.” With over 300 SHP chapters, this made alignment of processes and procedures a struggle.

This struggle led the SHP team to turn to Litmos. “We looked at many online learning platforms, but really felt the feature set along with the onboarding process and resources provided by Litmos would be what we needed to stand up our online learning in the shortest time possible” notes Scheibach.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Day-to-Day and Results with Litmos

SHP has 300+ chapters in the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Bahamas with core team members at each chapter, between 6-8 members, that need to access volunteer training.

According to Scheibach,“we use Litmos for just in time learning for our chapter presidents and their Core Team members to get up to date and engaging content. Running a chapter of SHP takes knowledge of multiple computer applications and procedures and Litmos is a great vehicle in this process.”

Scheibach notes that a key reason for choosing Litmos was the Litmos Content Authoring Tool (CAT). As a not for profit, budgets can be tight requiring a system that had an easy to use yet powerful content authoring tool directly within the LMS, rather than purchasing additional software. The ability to create their own SCORM courses from inside the Litmos LMS has been crucial. In fact, every course that SHP has built out has been with the Litmos CAT.

By utilizing Litmos resources such as the Litmos Customer Learning Center (“Dojo”), SHP was able to go live with their new learning solution, with custom created content, in under 90 days! “Litmos Learning Center (Litmos University) and the Litmos resources were excellent and allowed us to get up to speed very quickly. Learning the intricacies of Content Author tool might have been the biggest learning curve, but after some trial and error and utilizing the Litmos resources we became relatively effective and efficient,” says Scheibach.

With Litmos, SHP has also been able to create a more efficient 2 step process for onboarding new chapters. According to Scheibach, “we start with face-to-face instruction, but then new Chapters can go back to their community and additional team members use the Litmos’ just in time instruction to bolster their understanding and/or learn additional skills, processes, and procedures. We created a required learning path that we assign to new chapter presidents and have assessments at the end of each course that must be passed with 80% or better before they can really get going.”

Since implementing Litmos over 250 SHP employees have completed trainings and 829 courses have been completed in the LMS.
